Rangers defeat painful for Motherwell star as he targets big Fir Park impact after toasting goal against Ibrox foes

Ross Tierney is targeting a big 2022/23 Premiership season at Motherwell as he adjusts to life in Scottish football.

The 21-year-old signed for Graham Alexander's side in January from League of Ireland club Bohemian, and has impressed in flashes during his spell so far.

He netted his second goal and first at Fir Park on Saturday but it wasn't enough as the Steelmen succumbed to a 3-1 loss against Rangers.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men were reduced to 10 players after Leon Balogun's sending off and Tierney rose highest from a cross to cancel out Liam Kelly's own goal before half-time, celebrating in front of a packed travelling crowd with his ears cupped.

But Scott Wright's effort and a Rangers penalty from James Tavernier ended Motherwell's chances of success. 'Well are sixth, and still a point off fourth amid a run of one win in 14 league matches.

A Republic of Ireland youth international, Tierney has enjoyed his first few months as a full-time professional, and the Rangers test was one he relished.

He said: "They went down to 10 men but they still have quality players. It's disappointing not to get the result but the first half performance was decent.

"It’s tough to take. It was my first home start and it was good to get my feet on the ground against tough opposition. In a way I am still finding my feet.

"It was an alright goal and I enjoy scoring. I’m a small lad and can go unnoticed in the box – but I’ve got a good leap on me.

"I've been able to use the gym a bit more when I haven't been starting. I’m enjoying my game and I know I’ll improve the more I play.

"Coming in back in January, the second half of this season was about me getting used to full-time football.
