Ralph Hasenhuttl surprised by controversial Harry Maguire moment in Manchester United draw

Ralph Hasenhuttl was surprised at how quickly VAR checked Southampton's penalty claim against Manchester United.

United drew 1-1 against Southampton on Saturday afternoon after Che Adam's goal cancelled out Jadon Sancho's opener.

Ralf Rangnick's side looked well in control of the fixture in the first half of the match, but they once again flattered to deceive and underwhelmed in the second half, with Southampton finding an equaliser immediately after the interval had ended.

United looked devoid of confidence as the game progressed and Southampton looked dangerous roaming forward.

Harry Maguire has received heavy criticism in recent weeks and he was in the firing line again as the Saints searched for a winner.

The United captain was troubled by Armando Broja throughout and the Southampton winger was seemingly brought down in the area by a clumsy Maguire with just a few minutes to go, however, VAR checked the incident and ruled no penalty.

The swiftness of the VAR check surprised Hasenhuttl, who thought his side had enough chances to win the game.

"When you challenge, it seems from us, it only takes two or three seconds and immediately it’s checked," Hasenhuttl said.

"It’s always very quick. But I mean, we had chances to win without this penalty and this is what is disappointing but I don’t want to be too critical today. As I say, after one less day to recover you could feel we had a little bit less pressure.

"It was enough to win the point here, it was a big signal today.”
