Ralf Rangnick's record vs Thomas Tuchel doesn't bode well for Manchester United ahead of Chelsea

Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Thursday night in the Premier League. United currently sit in sixth place but after consecutive away defeats at Liverpool and Arsenal, a top-four finish is looking extremely unlikely.

Chelsea tightened their grip on third spot last time out with a late winner against Europa League semi-finalists West Ham. Ralf Rangnick and Thomas Tuchel have a unique relationship with the former helping Tuchel take his first steps into coaching back in 2000 when Rangnick appointed him as one of the youth team coaches at Stuttgart.

Prior to this, however, Tuchel had also played under Rangnick at SSV Ulm in the late 1990s. And now, over 20 years later, both managers find themselves in the Premier League after spells in the Bundesliga. But how do their records as managers in the German League compare?

Neither boss was able to win a Bundesliga title but both racked up well over 200 games, with Rangnick managing a win rate of 41.6 per cent, averaging 1.48 points per game. Tuchel slightly edges out the United interim manager with a win rate of 45 per cent and an average of 1.6 points per game.

The two Germans have faced off five times so far during their managerial careers, with Tuchel getting the better of his former boss in four of the five meetings. These games took place when Tuchel was manager of Mainz and Rangnick was at either Hoffenheim or Schalke.
