Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish offer Man City hope as Riyad Mahrez suffers World Cup pain

Attentions will divert back to the mouth-watering Premier League title race after several Manchester City players were involved for their nations on Tuesday night. It was generally a positive night across the board, but sadly not for Riyad Mahrez.

On qualifying duty for Algeria, the fleet-footed City winger could only watch on as Cameroon inflicted a dramatic and painstaking defeat on Mahrez and his teammates. Here is our round-up of the international action.

Starting in Blida, the World Cup qualifying showdown between Algeria and Cameroon was evenly-poised and, as it seemed, all set to go to penalties. That was until a 124th minute winner.

The first leg had finished 1-0 to Algeria, but the Desert Foxes were beaten 2-1 at home and, as a result, have missed out on the 2022 competition in Qatar due to an away goals rule which has been disbanded in competitions such as the Champions League for this season. Mahrez won his 74th cap last night.

Elsewhere, it was a memorable night for Raheem Sterling as he captained England at Wembley. Sterling marked the occasion with a goal and also provided an assist for Ollie Watkins to open the scoring.

Sterling turned into the net to make it 2-0 against ten-man Ivory Coast after a clever reverse pass from £100million man Jack Grealish - who like his City teammate impressed. Phil Foden came off the bench in that game.

Back to World Cup qualification, and Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva were part of the Portugal side that edged out North Macedonia to qualify for Qatar. Two goals from Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes did the damage.
