Quick hands in final minute sees Blitzboks clinch 5th place over New Zealand at Vancouver Sevens

On Sunday, South Africa clawed their way to a 17-15 victory over New Zealand to claim a fifth-place finish at the Vancouver Sevens.

The All Blacks Sevens snatched the lead early after the first-half whistle as Caleb Tangitau touched down for the five-pointer.

Neil Powell's charges responded immediately through captain Siviwe Soyizwapi as Ronald Brown ensured a two-point lead via the conversion.

However, Kitiona Vai gave the southwestern pacific nation a 7-10 lead at half-time with a clinical try.

That lead would extend for the All Blacks early in the restart, with Ngarohi McGarvey-Black claiming the try with another unanswered conversion, which would eventually come back to bite them.

With no less than five minutes on the clock, the Blitzboks had to put in the hard yards to get back into the fixture, and JC Pretorius gave the South Africans the hope they needed with a well-orchestrated try.

But the failed conversion kept the score at 12-15 to New Zealand as the clock continued to wither down.

Selwyn Davids restarted from the middle of the park as the match continued with less than a minute remaining.

Impi Visser snatched the ball from the grasps of the oncoming black jerseys to keep South Africa with a chance at attacking.

Quick hands saw a brilliant move by the Blitzboks that created an overlap, with James Murphy completing the comeback with the match's final try.

South Africa maintain their lead in the series after six rounds with 111 points.
