Pundits agree with Paul Scholes about what Manchester United's next manager must bring

Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves all agreed that Manchester United’s new manager needs to instil fear back in the club this summer.

United’s dismal season continued on Tuesday night as they were dumped out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid. A 1-0 win on the night proved enough for Diego Simeone’s side at Old Trafford, with the Spanish champions going through 2-1 on aggregate.

Despite the fine margin of the defeat, the hosts rarely threatened, bar Anthony Elanga’s close-range effort being saved by Jan Oblak in an encouraging first half display that dropped off after half-time. The defeat ends United's hopes of silverware this season, with their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League still hanging in the balance.

It has certainly been a campaign to forget at Old Trafford, with pre-season predictions of a possible title challenge quickly evaporating. And the former United trio on punditry duty for BT Sport on Tuesday all agreed on the key ingredient that has gone missing from the current side.

“The fear is definitely gone, it’s a different generation,” Hargreaves said. “I remember walking down the tunnel in my first game against Man City away, we were 1-0 down at half-time and I was walking off.

“Rio comes running beside me saying ‘Owen hurry up get in the dressing room quick, the gaffer is going to go mental’. The fear that the gaffer had created, or that Rio knew it could come, I had never experienced.

“The gaffer turned out to be calm but the fact that Rio even knew that it could come was inspiring. We didn’t want to let the boss down.”
