Pundit urges Newcastle to finalise transfer swoop for Burnley player

Paddy Kenny believes that Newcastle United should be targeting Burnley’s Nick Pope over Dean Henderson.

It appears that Eddie Howe is on the lookout for a new stopper this summer and reports have suggested that the Magpies will look to do a deal for Manchester United’s Henderson, who is keen to leave Old Trafford in search of regular football.

Therefore, that move seems relatively straightforward if a fee can be agreed, but former Sheffield United keeper Paddy Kenny explained to Football Insider why he feels Pope would be a better addition for Newcastle.

“If I was going to sign anyone for a big fee, it would be Pope at Burnley. Pope is older than someone like Dean Henderson but all that means is Pope is in his prime. Pope has been unbelievable recently, I really do rate him.

“He would also be a lot cheaper than Henderson. I think Pope could be signed for next to nothing. Burnley need to sell and Pope won’t want to stay. They can get that deal done.”

The Clarets are expected to try and raise funds following relegation, with Pope undoubtedly one of their most valuable assets.

The verdict

Firstly, you can understand why Kenny is recommending that Newcastle sign Pope because he has shown over the years that he is a top keeper.

You can be sure that Burnley won’t let him go for ‘next to nothing’ though, despite their financial issues, but he would certainly be available.

From Burnley’s perspective, there will be an acceptance that Pope will want to leave and play at the highest level, so it’s about negotiating a big fee and ensuring they bring in a good replacement.
