Pundit believes West Ham have 'missed a trick' this season

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has claimed West Ham have ‘missed a trick’ this season.

Despite reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League and still being in the hunt for a top-four finish, the Hammers are in danger of falling short of their achievements from the 2020/21 campaign.

Having been soundly beaten 3-1 by London rivals Tottenham on the weekend, questions have been asked about the squad as injuries and fitness issues mount up.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy suggested that David Moyes would’ve wanted to bolster the ranks in the January window.

“I do think they missed a trick in not getting someone. Even if they couldn’t get someone they thought would take his place, someone who can compete at his level. Someone a bit younger or hungry who doesn’t mind coming off the bench. All the top clubs in the Premier League, when a team makes a signing in your position you automatically jump up a gear. You know you may get your place taken. When Antonio is fit, generally he plays. Although he [Moyes] said the right things, I don’t think he got what he wanted [in January]. He’s an intelligent man, why wouldn’t he want someone in?”

Michail Antonio is currently on a 10 Premier League game goal drought and Jarrod Bowen is sidelined through injury.

Spot on.

Albeit it remains imminently possible that the Hammers could achieve something remarkable this season, those chances have undoubtedly been damaged by an apparent loss of momentum in recent weeks.

Strengthening the squad in the summer has to be a priority, hopefully with the lure of European football still on the table.
