PSL relegation battle royale: Gallants and Chippa hold the aces, Maritzburg on a wing and a prayer

It's probably a good thing that Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids is on his way to Europe to sort out his UEFA coaching badges.

It would have been rather painful for him to watch on when other teams decide on the fate of his side after their 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday.

The fact that such an important game had to take place on Tuesday instead of Saturday firstly spoke to Sundowns' never-ending CAF schedule and secondly, the Premier Soccer League's inability to find a solution to such an important juncture of the season.

Indeed, the reasoning behind playing the last two rounds of league games with simultaneous kick-offs makes sense and has always been sound.

In this case, with Maritzburg not playing while the other relegation combatants are, it doesn't make sense. Even if Marumo Gallants were disadvantaged by playing in the CAF Confederations Cup.

That said, the relegation lot has been drawn and it's up to the remaining teams who still have everything to gain and lose from the playoffs.
