PSG chief broke linesman’s flag in furious dressing room confrontation after Real Madrid loss
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi tried to enter the referee’s room following Real Madrid’s dramatic Champions League win and broke the linesman’s flag.
The French side took a 1-0 lead to the Bernabeu and appeared to be cruising into the quarter-finals after Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring on Wednesday night, though things changed dramatically on the hour mark.
PSG had been keeping the ball with ease until Karim Benzema chased down goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, giving him a big barge to send his pass straight to Vinicius Junior, who squared it for Benzema to pull a goal back.
The veteran French striker then netted two more quick-fire goals to complete his hat-trick and seal a 3-2 aggregate win as PSG imploded, sparking wild scenes of celebration in the Spanish capital.
But after the game PSG were furious with the decision to let Real’s first goal stand and felt Benzema had fouled Donnarumma.
According to the referee’s report following the match, both Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Leonardo headed straight down to the Bernabeu dressing room following the full-time whistle and tried to confront the officials.
During the angry confrontation, Al-Khelaifi allegedly hit the assistant’s flag, breaking it, and Marca claim the whole incident was recorded by a Real Madrid employee.
