Proteas women v Sri Lanka - Brits shines with ODI ton as rain has final say

Rain spoiled Tazmin Brits' party as the opening ODI between the Proteas women and Sri Lanka was called off in the visitor's run chase at Buffalo Park in East London on Tuesday.

Brits scored a stunning ODI century as South Africa posted a competitive 270-6 after being sent to bat first.

In their run-chase, Sri Lanka was 23-0 in the seventh over before the heavens soon opened, and persistent rain resulted in the game being abandoned.

Earlier on, the Proteas got off to a solid start thanks to a 94-run opening stand between skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Brits.

Wolvaardt struggled a bit more than usual on the slow East London wicket and departed for 41 off 57 balls (hitting three fours).

Brits then went on to share a 70-run second-wicket partnership with Anneke Bosch before the latter holed out in the deep for 39.

All-rounder Sune Luus form with the bat remains in question despite an encouraging start. Luus survived an early dropped catch on two but didn't make the most of the opportunity as she again flicked it back to the bowler Sugandika Kumari for a 30-ball 22.

However, the day belonged to opener Brits, who shouldered much of the Proteas' innings as she brought up her second ODI century in her 25th ODI.

After hitting a boundary off Kavisha Dilhari, Brits fell the following delivery as she was caught at the boundary rope and departed for a sublime 116 off 128 balls (hitting 12 fours).

All-rounder Nadine de Klerk, who was bowled on the final ball of the innings, scored a handy 34 off 22 balls (hitting five fours and a six), which got the Proteas to the 270-mark.

Oshadi Ranasinghe, Kavisha Dilhari, and Sugandika Kumari each took two wickets for the visitors.

Scores in brief:
