Proteas hope to start well at Women's World Cup as they prepare for Bangladesh spin

Proteas coach Hilton Moreeng says his side will take each game as it comes as they kick off their Women's Cricket World Cup campaign this week.

Following two losses in the warm-ups, South Africa still head into the World Cup as serious contenders in New Zealand.

South Africa comes off a 2-1 ODI series triumph against the West Indies, seeing them record their fifth-consecutive ODI series win.

They fell short with the bat both hit-outs against India and England and with star batter Lizelle Lee out of Saturday's opener against Bangladesh, Moreeng is looking for improvement. 

"As impressive as our bowling unit is, we need to make sure as a batting unit that you give enough on the board to be able to defend," said Moreeng after Wednesday's loss to England.

"Our first game in Dunedin is a change of scenery, we know now every game from here onwards we need to pull everything together.

"If you play good cricket, you'll give yourself an opportunity to make those knockout stages. We'll approach each game as it comes, different styles of play with teams that pose different forms of threats.

"The important thing is to start well and give ourselves opportunities to set up the game and give ourselves the chance to win."

The Proteas will face Bangladesh for the first time since 2018 and are expecting a fierce battle with spin at University Oval in Dunedin.

"They're a team that prides themselves in their spinners. They've been improving and even though you haven't played them, you always keep tabs on different teams," said Moreeng.
