Pride of Britain offering community heroes a share of £100k fund

Local heroes could land up to £2,500 to help them boost their communities, thanks to a new fund set up to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards.

Grants of £2,500, £1,000 and £500 are all available as part of the Pride of Britain Fund’s £100,000 giveaway for good causes, and you can nominate the people or groups who you think should receive it.

It could be someone who devotes their time to make sure older people have companionship and a warm meal, or an unsung hero who spruces up the high street with flowers.

It may also be a sports club, where volunteers give kids a safe space to play, or a youth group putting people on the path to a brighter future.

One such charity which goes the extra mile to make Manchester a better place to live is Humans MCR.

Humans MCR is a food poverty charity providing meals and essential nutritious food across our region. The team works hard to ensure every person using their service is treated with dignity and respect. They are based in Blackley, North Manchester, but work with families and individuals in need across Manchester, Salford, Rochdale, Stockport, Trafford and Bury.

Humans MCR deliver emergency food packages in unmarked vans, to maintain privacy, and give people in need a choice over what they eat. As well as a community grocery service providing supermarket staples at massively reduced prices, the charity also offers packages for people who only have access to a kettle.

Founder Lewey Hellewell, 44, who used traditional food banks, set up the outfit to give people a more ‘dignified’ and ‘respectful’ alternative. He said: “I was made redundant and for the first time in my life I really struggled to secure any new work and I started to work
