Premier League’s coldest penalty taker? Ivan Toney & Lyle Taylor techniques compared

The Premier League has seen some incredible penalty takers down the years.

The likes of Alan Shearer, Matt Le Tissier and Frank Lampard immediately spring to mind when thinking of players who were usually ruthless from 12 yards.

All three of those players were no-nonsense when it came to their penalty technique. Decide where you’re going, strike the ball with plenty of power and accuracy, job done.

These days, however, an increasing number of footballers are using different techniques to try and psyche out opposing goalkeepers.

On Friday night we saw Brentford’s Ivan Toney score an ice-cold penalty past Brighton’s Robert Sanchez.

That’s now 20 penalties scored from 20 attempts in a Brentford shirt for Toney, who is doing his utmost to get a call-up for England’s 2022 World Cup squad.

Toney stands perfectly still, looking directly at the ‘keeper. He doesn’t once look at the ball after he’s placed it on the spot.

As Toney approaches the ball, he waits for the goalkeeper to make the first move. The forward then placed the ball in the opposite corner of the net.
