Premier League's £5.3bn deal to give Newcastle United extra incentive in relegation battle

The financial importance of Newcastle United's battle for Premier League survival has been highlighted once again by confirmation of the latest overseas TV rights package.

The Associated Press (AP) reports that for the first time in the competition's history, top-flight clubs will rake in more from international broadcasters than domestic stations.

United and their Premier League rivals were reportedly made aware of the latest agreement following a meeting of top executives on Thursday.

It is projected the upcoming three-year cycle will generate £5.3bn from overseas, overtaking the £5.1bn agreement in place with domestic broadcasters.

The Premier League opted to roll over the pre-existing agreements with Amazon Prime, BT Sport and Sky Sports in the wake of uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This demand for the rights overseas was shown in the United States of America, where Comcast-owner NBC agreed a $2.7bn package which almost trebled the value of broadcast rights in the country.

AP add the latest agreements mean the Premier League champions in 2023 stand to bank £170m, an increase of £9m from the prize on offer to this season's winner.

The club which finishes 20th and suffers relegation will be awarded £106m, in comparison to the current cut of £96m.

Newcastle's victory over Everton on Tuesday night lifted Eddie Howe's side out of the relegation zone for the first time since October.
