Premier League forced to release statement during Man City vs Manchester United

VAR checked and cleared Manchester United's second-half penalty claim after United were left aggrieved during Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund went to ground under the challenge from City captain Ruben Dias as he controlled the ball in the box. The defender looked to step across the Dane's and seemingly made contact with his right knee but referee Anthony Taylor waved play on.

City were looking to move to within six points of the Premier League leaders and took the lead when Josko Gvardiol lost his marker to head home past Andre Onana. United rarely threatened their local rivals but looked better in the second-half with their best opportunity falling to captain Bruno Fernandes but he could only divert his flick wide of the post.

However, the game sparked into life in the dying embers with Amad inspiring the turnaround. He swooped in on Matheus Nunes' loose pass before the Portuguese brought him down then minutes later, he raced in behind to complete the comeback.

In a tweet, the Premier League match centre said: "The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge between Højlund and Dias was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming it was normal contact."

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville felt the claims were valid but he was quickly dispelled by ex-Premier League official Mike Dean. The full-back argued: "That was clumsy, that we do know. It might just have been a coming together as they both try to get the ball.
