Power surges into contention at the Irish Open

Seamus Power posted a second consecutive 68 at the Horizon Irish Open to put himself right in the mix at the halfway point while Shane Lowry battled hard to ensure that he will be present for the weekend rounds at Mount Juliet.

Power sits on eight-under-par, three shots behind leader Spaniard Jorge Campillo who holds a one-shot advantage heading into round three.

After opening with three pars and a bogey, Waterford native Power hit a hot streak with five birdies between the fifth and 11th holes giving the large crowd plenty to cheer about.

The highlight came at the par-five 10th when Power hit a stunning bunker shot to 30 foot to set up an eagle chance that ended with a birdie.

Power would have two birdies and two bogeys from there to ensure a tie for fourth heading into the weekend.

Shane Lowry looked like he would miss out for most of the day, but a brilliant finish led to great scenes on the back nine.

The Offaly man rattled home four birdies to finish on three-under, just inside the cut line. Also on that total was Padraig Harrington who posted a one-under round of 71.

Niall Kearney endured a difficult day as he shot a 74, but that should be good enough for a weekend pass with the cut-line falling to a projected two-under late on Friday.

Cormac Sharvin was also in a strong position on three-under-par with eight holes remaining, but a quadruple bogey on 13, when he found both the trees and water, saw his round unravel and he finished on four-over-par.

Mark Power [even par], Jonathan Caldwell [+5], Colm Campbell [+8] and Paul Dunne [+8] missed the cut while John Murphy and David Higgins were also set to miss out as they closed out their second rounds.
