Portsmouth, Gillingham and Walsall rumours don't interest Dorking Wanderers striker

Alfie Rutherford wants to put rumours linking him with a host of Football League clubs to bed, insisting he has “absolutely no intention of leaving Dorking Wanderers”.

The 23-year-old striker has been a hot topic of this summer’s transfer rumour mill with Portsmouth, Gillingham, Walsall and Chesterfield among the clubs linked.

The interest is thanks to Rutherford’s outstanding 2021-22 season with Wanderers that saw him fire in 32 goals as the club finished second in the National League South table, gaining promotion via the play-offs.

His strike record is all the most impressive as he wasn’t Wanderers’ penalty taker and also spent one National League South game in goal, after number one Dan Lincoln was sent off just minutes after kick off.

And Rutherford, who is a Portsmouth-based roofer when he isn’t firing in goals for Wanderers, insists he is not only very happy at the Surrey club but could not be enjoying his football more.

“I want to be at Dorking Wanderers. I love playing for this club,” Rutherford, who started his career at Portsmouth Football Club before moving on to Moneyfields and Havant & Waterlooville, said.

“I want to focus on starting the season well at Wanderers, picking up where I left off last year.

“I love the club, I love the fans and I love the gaffer and I have absolutely no intention of leaving Dorking Wanderers. Everything the gaffer has done for me since I joined the club has been unbelievable; he’s a top man.

“I’m really enjoying my football at Dorking and with the way we play, I get a lot of chances to score a lot of goals.

“All the players I’m playing with at Dorking are top lads and it’s probably one of the best groups I’ve been in. Everyone works hard for each other and everyone loves each
