Police issue major update after boy, 16, dies in river

Detectives have issued a major update as they continue to investigate the death of a teenage boy. The body of Jonty Evans was tragically pulled from the River Weaver, in Cheshire, on Sunday, September 1.

Police issued a public appeal to find the 16-year-old as a missing person two days earlier. He was found in a section of the Weaver near to Riverside, in Nantwich.

Earlier this week, police confirmed that two 16-year-old boys from Crewe had been arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault in connection with Jonty's death. The pair were arrested last Thursday, September 5, and later released on bail.

In an update issued today (September 13), Cheshire Police has confirmed that both 16-year-olds have now been eliminated from their investigation. Enquiries remain ongoing.

Jonty, from Baddington, South Cheshire, was seen at between 10.45pm and 11.15pm on Queens Drive, in Nantwich, on Friday, August 30. It's believed he was in the Waterlode area of the town in the early hours of Saturday, August 31.

Potential witnesses are urged to come forward. A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Officers' enquiries remain ongoing and they are asking anyone who may have seen Jonty between 12.30am and 2.30am on Saturday, August 31, in the Waterlode area of Nantwich to contact police.

"The same goes for any members of the public who may have captured Jonty on CCTV, dashcam and ring doorbell footage during the same timeframe and to submit it directly via MIPP. Information can also be passed on to Cheshire Police on 101 or via the website, quoting IML-1907900."
