Police chase ended in man's death - and women's life changing forever

The driver of a car which crashed during a police chase, killing one passenger and seriously injuring another, has been jailed. Simon Bailey, 34, died when a Nissan Micra being driven by Joshua Cleworth ploughed into two parked cars and a lamp post during the pursuit in Bolton.

A 39-year-old female passenger was also seriously injured during the smash on Lever Edge Lane in the early hours of October 2 last year. Police began chasing the Micra after Cleworth failed to stop for officers on Wigan Road.

Today (Friday) Cleworth, 29, of no fixed address, was jailed for 11 years and three months at Bolton Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving; and causing serious injury by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing.

Sgt Andrew Page, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This investigation shows very clearly the tragic consequences that dangerous driving can have for others. The thoughts of the investigation team remain with the victim's family who have had to bear this loss.

"I would like to assure the public that GMP will investigate every incident of dangerous driving to ensure our roads are safe and I would urge anyone with knowledge of any such incident to get in touch."
