Podcast: Paul Wellens on James Roby, England & coaching ambitions

St Helens assistant coach and former England and Great Britain full-back Paul Wellens is the latest guest on the Love Rugby League podcast.

Wellens, 42, made 495 appearances for Saints winning five Challenge Cups, five Super League titles and two World Club Challenges in a trophy-laden career.

The 2006 Man of Steel winner joined the backroom staff at the club as a player performance manager, working with the Academy and then the Reserves. He is now assistant coach under Kristian Woolf at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Wellens sits down with host George Riley to discuss all things rugby league, including James Roby’s upcoming incredible milestone and the season so far for the Saints.

Wellens discusses the season with St Helens; and if he believes the side should replace the injured Lewis Dodd, who will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Riley and Wellens talk through the career of Roby. The Saints skipper looks to become the most capped Super League player this weekend, overtaking Kevin Sinfield.

The former full-back discusses England’s World Cup preparations and the spots still up for grabs in Shaun Wane’s squad.

He also discusses the interest in him during the 2004 season from the NRL.
