Plymouth and Ipswich promoted to Championship from League One

Plymouth and Ipswich secured promotion to the Championship with contrasting victories on Saturday.

Argyle edged past Burton 1-0 thanks to a deflected strike from Niall Ennis on the stroke of half-time. They had to endure six minutes of added time at the end of the match before the celebrations could begin at Home Park and thousands of jubilant fans flooded on to the pitch.

The Devon side will win the title next week if they better the result of Ipswich, who also sealed their return to the Championship after a four-year absence with an emphatic 6-0 defeat of Exeter.

Five goals came in a pulsating 24-minute first-half spell through Massimo Luongo, George Hirst, Nathan Broadhead and two from Conor Chaplin. Wes Burns added the sixth after the break.

Kieran McKenna’s side moved on to 97 points, just a point adrift of Plymouth going into the final round of matches. Sheffield Wednesday won 3-0 at Shrewsbury but will now have to settle for a place in the playoffs.
