'Players came to training drunk': Ex-coach Truter's 'first-hand experience' of AmaZulu booze issue

Brandon Truter has confirmed that there was a drinking problem at AmaZulu during his time as coach of the struggling DStv Premiership team.

Truter, now head coach at Sekhukhune United, was appointed head coach at Usuthu last season after initially joining in a caretaker capacity following his sacking by Swallows.

Speaking after Sekhukhune's 2-0 defeat to, none other than his former club, AmaZulu, at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, Truter confirmed the allegations first made by former AmaZulu employee, Phumlani Dube, last week.

"Yes, it's true," Truter told SABC Sport when he asked about the allegations.

"I am not going to lie for anybody. Players came to training drunk and I had to deal with it at one stage, so whoever said it is right."

While Truter has revived Sekhukhune's fortunes this term, Saturday's defeat in Durban was his first in seven games in all competitions.

Ethan Brooks (30') and Ramahlwe Mphahlele (75') were both on target as the hosts ended a four-match winless run in the league. They were down to 10 men when Sphesihle Maduna saw red with 11 minutes remaining in the match.

"AmaZulu are capable of this result (beating Sekhukhune 2-0). They proved it against Kaizer Chiefs with the 4-0 win in January," continued Truter, whose time at the Durban-based club wasn't all smooth sailing as results began to elude him, despite an initially impressive start.

"It’s their mindset and attitude. There are some rotten individuals in that squad – I have first-hand experience of that."

Dube, AmaZulu’s former marketing manager, told broadcaster Robert Marawa on his radio show last week that the club has a significant drinking issue.
