Pierre Gasly told to follow Carlos Sainz example and leave Red Bull

AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly has been told to follow the example of Carlos Sainz and leave the Red Bull set-up in order to kickstart his career.

The Frenchman has impressed since heading back to AlphaTauri, who were once Toro Rosso, and it is clear that he has put behind him his difficult period in the Red Bull team.

However, a return to racing for the Milton Keynes-based outfit looks far off at the moment, with Max Verstappen on a long-term deal there and Sergio Perez contracted until the end of 2024 now after recently signing a new deal.

Certainly, the path to the team looks blocked for Gasly and, though he still has lots of years left in the sport, he will be potentially thinking he needs to look elsewhere for a drive at the front of the field if AlphaTauri cannot provide it and Red Bull cannot offer it.

Speaking to the F1 Nation Podcast, journalist Tom Clarkson suggested that is exactly what should happen, with him saying that following Carlos Sainz’s example might be the best avenue to go down:

“Pierre needs to do a Carlos Sainz.

“He needs to leave the Red Bull family to progress his Formula One career. And I think for him McLaren would be a very good shout.”

Sainz, of course, was part of the Red Bull family himself once upon a time with him driving for Toro Rosso alongside Max Verstappen in what was a really exciting young driver pairing at the time.

He felt his best option was to leave and try his luck outside the Red Bull bubble, though, and he has since driven for the likes of McLaren and, of course most recently, Ferrari.
