Pep Guardiola's international management admission may be an issue for Man City amid England links

With rumours circulating of the FA being set to pursue Pep Guardiola if Gareth Southgate steps down as England manager in 2024, many are wondering whether the City boss could transfer his skills from club to country management.

Despite England failing to win a major competition since 1966, Southgate has reignited the hope of the nation. And after being eliminated by France in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, there is an argument that Southgate may have taken this squad as far as he can.

So could the current Manchester City manager take the team further than Southgate has managed?

Since Guardiola arrived in Manchester, he has brought nothing but success to the club, winning five Premier League titles in his seven years at the Etihad, with a total haul of 15 trophies including the Champions League. It is no surprise the FA would consider approaching the Catalan coach.

And Guardiola already has a good relationship with many of the England squad, such as Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, John Stones and Kyle Walker. He already has the experience of working with England’s top players and achieving success.

And with the England squad brimming with stars of the present and future like Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, his ability to implement a winning mentality could be the key for the Three Lions.

One thing that England have done so well throughout Southgate’s tenure has been to introduce young players into the set-up. This is something that the City manager would continue to do, with the likes of Foden, Cole Palmer, Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb all benefitting from his knowledge.
