Pep Guardiola reaction to Rodri red card could earn him same Man City treatment as Joao Cancelo

Rodri's moment of madness

The Manchester City fans rose to their feet to applaud Rodri as he trudged off having received his marching orders, but may not have been so supportive had they seen a replay of the incident. Rodri had needlessly squared up to Morgan Gibbs-White at the very start of the second half and then stupidly raised both hands to the midfielder's throat. The lengthy check only highlighted the inadequacies of VAR to re-referee every incident rather than there being any defence for Rodri's actions.

Pep Guardiola said Rodri was the complete midfielder in the week after his goal against Red Star, and that he was the best midfielder in Europe. He won't be for the next three games - including the crucial trip to Arsenal - after a needless red card. Guardiola kept Joao Cancelo out of the side almost indefinitely after his own stupid red card against Fulham last season and Sergio Gomez hasn't been trusted in defence since his red against Copenhagen - so will Rodri get the same treatment?

Even for a player as integral as Rodri, it was a moment of madness from one of Guardiola's captains, and the boss didn't look at the midfielder as he walked towards the dugout. Only when Rodri had passed did Guardiola turn and glare at the player, clearly seething at the sending off. Less important players have seen their City careers ended for lesser offences.
