Pep Guardiola has solved long-term Man City goalkeeper issue

Amid all the uncertainty over key Manchester City players, one department has given Pep Guardiola a welcome degree of continuity ahead of the 2023/24 season opener.

City's first 'signing' of the summer was a year-long extension for popular third-choice goalkeeper Scott Carson, meaning that no new signing had to be sought in that position.

Stefan Ortega arrived last summer as Zack Steffen left on loan, with the German proving a more-than-capable deputy for Ederson. In fact, a portion of City fans still feel that Ortega offers more than Ederson does when it comes to picking a first-choice stopper.

Ederson's strong end to the season cemented his status as number one, though, not that it was in any doubt. As Ortega helped City win the FA Cup final, Ederson returned to produce one of his best-ever performances to win the Champions League - including two late, late match-winning saves.

Where he can improve: At the risk of entertaining the strange online obsession with Ederson, maybe he can improve his shot-stopping in games where he has little to do. As ever, though, the reward of Ederson's footwork and distribution outweighs the risk, and he is a player who is one of City's most consistent. He emphatically answered those doubts over his saving ability in the Champions League final, too.
