Pep Guardiola explains Phil Foden's Man City selection vs Newcastle United

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confidently confirmed that Phil Foden is back to his best ahead of the visit of Newcastle United this lunchtime.

Foden has been in fine form for City in his last two appearances. He scored against Bournemouth last weekend before bagging a brace against Bristol City in the FA Cup in midweek.

This form comes after what Foden deemed was the 'lowest part of his career' to date after the World Cup in Qatar. Against Manchester United in January, the English winger picked up a foot injury which kept him out of the team before his return against Nottingham Forest.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Guardiola told BT Sport that although Foden had been a little bit down this year, he had no doubt about choosing him against Newcastle. He explained: "The strikers scoring goals always gives you a boost.

"No one had any doubt about Phil, a little bit down but he is back. His energy and his commitment in front of goal, that’s why we decide for him."

City know that they will be able to put major pressure on leaders Arsenal if they are victorious this afternoon. Mikel Arteta's team are not in action until later today when they host Bournemouth.

So, should the Blues beat Eddie Howe's men, City will move just two points behind the North London club. Newcastle meanwhile have their own motives for winning as they push for a Champions League place.
