Paul Merson makes bizarre Man United claim as he reveals what will have 'shocked' Ruben Amorim

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has claimed new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim will have been 'shocked' by his side's performance in last Sunday's 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

United got off to a flying start in Suffolk, taking the lead with less than two minutes on the clock through Marcus Rashford, but were pegged back shortly before half-time when Omari Hutchinson's deflected effort looped over Andre Onana.

Ipswich would have gone into the half-time break in front had it not been for a brilliant save from Onana in the United goal.

The Cameroonian made a stunning save to deny Liam Delap from point-blank range prior to Hutchinson's goal, and then denied him again after the interval, keeping out a flick at the near post.

United offered flashes of what Amorim was looking for as his players adjusted to a 3-4-3 formation, but Merson is not convinced by the 39-year-old's system.

He told Sportskeeda: "Nothing changed for Manchester United last week, in my opinion. Ipswich were by far the better team.

"I'm not entirely convinced about Manchester United's new system under Amorim. After a point in that game, you would've thought Ipswich were the bigger club and not United – that's how it went.

"You could say everyone was away on international duty and he did not have enough time. But if that performance were against one of the big boys in the league, Manchester United would have been destroyed by four or five goals."
