Paul Merson admits he's 'shocked' at something Manchester United haven't done in transfer window

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes signing Harry Kane this summer would have guaranteed Manchester United the Premier League title at some point in the near future.

United, who will get their Premier League campaign up and running at home to Wolves next Monday, identified Kane as their primary striker target back in March. Sources indicated that boss Erik ten Hag was 'obsessed' with signing the Tottenham Hotspur striker.

However, it quickly became clear that Spurs would not be willing to sell the England captain, who is out of contract next June, to a Premier League rival. United quickly moved on and, of course, strengthened their forward options with former Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Though United's hopes of landing Kane this summer appear dead in the water, the 30-year-old is still the subject of interest from German giants Bayern Munich, who reportedly saw an £86million bid rejected earlier this week. The German club are said to remain in discussions with Spurs.

But whether Kane swaps the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the Allianz Arena or not this summer, Merson insists he is 'shocked' that United did not do more to try and lure him to Old Trafford.

"I still sit here today shocked that Man United haven't bought him," Merson told Sky Sports. "I am shocked.

"I think if Man United would have bought him, you would have got a good four or five years out of him and Man United would have won the Premier League."
