Paul Heckingbottom hands Sheffield United trial to ex-Crystal Palace full-back wanted by Chelsea

Sheffield United have taken former Crystal Palace youngster Sean Robertson on trial. The 21-year-old was included on the teamsheet for tonight's friendly with Burton Albion.

The right wing-back has been given the chance to impress by manager Paul Heckingbottom, who is in need of cover options in this position due to Jayden Bogle's injury. Bogle is expected to miss a large chunk of the opening part of the season as he recovers from surgery that ruled him out for a minimum of six months last season.

Heckingbottom currently has only George Baldock as an option in this position, but a reminder of the need for more Sheffield United cover came in midweek when Baldock came off with an injury in the defeat at Mansfield. Baldock will feature at Barnsley tomorrow and Robertson was handed his chance from the start in tonight's fixture.

From Northern Ireland, the youngster was previously wanted by Chelsea, who were said to be watching him and looking to hand him a trial at Stamford Bridge not long ago. He did not feature at senior level for the Eagles in a competitive fixture and played twice in their under 21 side that featured in the Football League Trophy last season.

However, he is now looking for a new club after leaving Selhurst Park last month. The youngster impressed in spells, too. Comfortable on the ball, he produced a couple of well-delivered crosses and also showed a great turn of pace. He certainly did his chances no harm.

Heckingbottom is looking at possibly signing another right wing-back in the coming weeks and Robertson could well be an option after this performance.
