Parramatta pips Newcastle 13-12 in NRLW debut as Broncos, Dragons celebrate wins

A field goal to Maddie Studdon gives the Eels a 13-12 victory over the Knights in the NRLW debut of both clubs, while the Broncos and Dragons enjoy their respective triumphs over the Roosters and Titans.

The Brisbane Broncos have sent an early message to their rivals by thrashing the Sydney Roosters 20-4.

The three-time premiers dominated the Roosters from the outset, with fullback Tamika Upton starring in what was a rematch of the 2020 NRLW grand final.

Emily Bass scored a double for the Broncos, with Roxette Murdoch and Millie Boyle also posting tries.

The Roosters were not helped by the loss of Corban Baxter on match eve to COVID-19, while their only try came through Olivia Kernick late.

Upton put on the play of the day when she stepped through three Roosters defenders in the lead-up to one try. She finished the match with 127 run metres and five tackle busts.

Boyle was immense, getting through 166 metres and backing up to score from the Upton bust.

The Broncos now have a 12-1 win-loss record in the NRLW, with their team having vastly more experience than any other in the competition.

Olympic gold medallist Emma Tonegato and rookie half Rachael Pearson have starred to help St George Illawarra beat newcomers Gold Coast 20-12 in the NRLW season opener.

Back in rugby league after eight years out while playing rugby sevens, Tonegato was brilliant for the Dragons from fullback in Newcastle.

She set up St George Illawarra's first try with a brilliant long ball and busted five tackles, as the Dragons dominated territory and beat the Titans out wide.

The Dragons led 14-0 with 13 minutes to go, before tries to Tiana Raftstrand-Smith and Shannon Mato launched a late Titans comeback.
