Parents devastated by axing of 'miracle' baby cream that was 'the only thing that worked'
Parents say they're devastated by the axing of a cream known for healing nappy rash.
Metanium Nappy Rash Ointment has been a staple of changing bags for years and is loved for its ability to soothe and clear sore skin quicker than other products on the market.
But manufacturer Thornton & Ross took the decision to discontinue the cream last year blaming 'constraints that have impacted our ability to guarantee consistent supply and maintain the high standards of excellence we strive for in all our products'.
With remaining stock now 'like gold dust' in shops, parents have been desperately trying to get their hands on the stuff, which usually costs around £4.65, but is now selling at hugely inflated prices on eBay.
And they say the company has 'rubbed salt into the wounds' by rebranding its other Everyday Barrier Ointment to 'make it look like the nappy rash cream', which is also used on other skin conditions.
The purple box containing it is now largely yellow, which was the colour of the Nappy Rash Ointment, sparking complaints of 'a marketing stunt'.
A petition set up urging the company to bring back the product has amassed hundreds of signatures.
Creator Ruth Paterson said: "Nearly every parent across the UK and Ireland has a tube of metanium in their nappy bag! It’s a game changer for those grappling with nappy rash. Used in hospital settings, NICUs and PICUs it has been a vital medicine for babies. That’s why it’s pretty unbelievable that it’s been discontinued by its manufacturer.
"My twin daughter relies on Metanium for the management of her skin condition, which was advised for use post-surgery. This product is vital to her day-to-day quality of life. Yet, we were disheartened to learn that the supplier has
