Oxford United 2-2 Swansea City: Hosts win 5-3 on penalties as Russell Martin's men crash out of Carabao Cup

Swansea City remain winless this season as they suffered a penalty shootout loss to Oxford United in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Swans dominated the opening half and got into a commanding position courtesy of goals from Jay Fulton and Liam Cullen at the Kassam Stadium. Oxford improved as the game wore on, and they pulled a goal back in unusual circumstances after Alex Gorrin blocked Steven Benda's clearance which rebounded into the Swansea net.

And they claimed a dramatic equaliser in injury-time as Cameron Brannagan's drilled free-kick took a huge deflection before bulging the net to force the game into a shootout. Cullen, Olivier Ntcham and Joe Allen all netted from the spot, but Matty Sorinola failed to hit the target as the home side won 5-3 on penalties to leave Swansea without a win in three games this term.

Russell Martin made eight changes following Saturday's 3-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers, with numerous fringe and academy players being handed starts while Ben Cabango took the captain's armband for the first time on his return to the side following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Swansea looked more than comfortable in an interchangeable 4-2-3-1 formation, although the first chance fell to the home side as James Henry's cross into the Swansea box causes a bit of panic, but Billy Bodin could only poke his effort wide.

That was to be about as good as it got for The U's in the first-half as Swansea took complete control of the contest. Martin's men were presented with a golden opportunity to break the deadlock as early as the eighth minute after goalkeeper Eddie McGinty was booked for handling the ball outside of his own 18-yard box.
