Ospreys' European hopes ended in heart-breaking fashion

The Ospreys suffered European heartbreak with a narrow 18-20 defeat to Lyon in their Challenge Cup quarter-final in Swansea.

Tries from Jac Morgan and George McGuigan gave them hope of a first European semi-final, but - despite dominating possession and territory for much of the game - it wasn't to be there day as the French side held them out.

The Ospreys had been Wales' last representative in European competition and would have been harbouring hopes of reaching the final in Cardiff later this season.

For all their success over the years, the Ospreys had never reached a European semi-final. Last year's Challenge Cup last-16 clash win over Sale Sharks was their first knockout victory in Europe.

Last week's win over the Scarlets was their second. If last Sunday's European showdown against their nearest and fiercest rivals was all about familiarity, this weekend was about the lack of it.

The early exchanges saw the two sides tentatively try to work each other out, with the opening exchanges seeing the two sides try to get on top in the kicking battle.

Occasionally, the opening passes broke away from that script. From a stolen lineout, Lyon put some width on the ball and scythed through the home side with stunning ease - Vincent Rattez dotting down from the flowing move.

To add injury to insult, Ospreys talismanic back-row Justin Tipuric limped off after the score - just two weeks before he's set to play at the Swansea.com Stadium for the final time as a player.

After being stunned by that score, the Ospreys worked their way back into matters. The scrum enjoyed plenty of success, while they appeared to be taking the legs from the big French forwards with their carrying game.
