Oscar Bobb praised for ‘nice’ Man City full debut vs Newcastle by teammate

Oscar Bobb had a solid full debut for Manchester City despite the team’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, says Stefan Ortega.

The 20-year-old had only featured in three cameo appearances before Wednesday evening, having made his competitive senior debut against Fulham earlier this month. Bobb played the full 90 minutes and started by supporting Julian Alvarez in attack before moving in to play as a false nine.

The Norwegian was frequently involved in attacking play, tallying 50 touches in all. He sparked a first-half move that saw him drive at the Newcastle defence before feeding Alvarez for a shot on goal - one of only a handful of clear chances for the visitors.

Speaking after the match, Ortega - starting his first Blues match of the season as cup goalkeeper - hailed the impact of Bobb on the game. “I think it was a nice start for him” the German told club media.

“He had a lot of action. We could pass the ball to him, he kept the ball so he helped us a lot. I think he’s a really good guy.”

Speaking of the overall display, Ortega said the team of eight changes found it tough but that the Blues still managed to find some control. He added: "I think the performance was quite well.

“We had a lot of rotation today. How we played was really good against this tough opponent. They [Newcastle] press all the time. We had a lot of ball possession and tried to play our style of football.

"We had a lot of young players. It was tough today. At the end, I'm disappointed about the result. I think they only had one or two chances today, not more. So it's unlucky."
