Orlando Pirates to embark on 4 664km journey, with grand prize of R20 million up for grabs

This week, a 4 664km journey is on the cards for Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

Their destination is Nigeria, and the Buccaneers will depart OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on logistical matters.

Pirates will contest Friday's CAF Confederation Cup final against RS Berkane at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

The Buccaneers were made to work hard against Al Ahli Tripoli in a two-legged semi-final. However, despite a home defeat to the Libyan outfiton Sunday, Pirates secured a 2-1 aggregate win.

Berkane overcame TP Mazembe in a 4-2 aggregate victory, scoring three goals in 17 minutes in the second leg in front of their home fans in Morocco.

They now have a chance for a second go at the title they won in 2020 against Egyptian side FC Pyramids.

Meanwhile, Pirates last participated in the Confederation Cup final in 2015, when they suffered a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel.

Two years prior to that, in 2013, Pirates went down to Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly 3-1 on aggregate in the Champions League final.

Win or lose, Pirates and Berkane are guaranteed to walk with some cash.

The runners-up will pocket a cool $625 000 (R10.1 million), while the club that leaves Uyo with the trophy will receive a cheque for $1.25 million (R20.30 million).
