Opinion: Will out of contract 30-year-old be on Celtic's transfer radar?

Celtic will no doubt have plans in place for who the team is going to sign in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if any of the players that the Hoops are interested in will be free transfers during the summer.

One such player who is out of contract in the summer is Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist, whose contract at Tannadice expires at the end of May.

Interestingly, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has called on the Hoops to make a move for the 30-year-old shot stopper, who has kept 12 clean sheets in 36 games this season.

Of course, the last time that Celtic fans would have seen the player in action was in the recent Scottish Cup tie between the Bhoys and Dundee United, when his error presented the ball to Giorgos Giakoumakis, whose goal finished the game off.

However, that error would not put Celtic off signing the player if he was one that the Hoops are interested in. But would Celtic want to sign the Swiss goalkeeper?

It will likely depend on if any goalkeepers leave the Hoops in the summer transfer window. The one goalkeeper at the club that the Bhoys will probably be looking to move on is Vasilas Barkas, who is currently out of favour and third choice behind Joe Hart and Scott Bain.

if Barkas leaves, then a spot on the Hoops squad could open up for Siegrist. However, he wouldn’t be first choice at Celtic, and it remains to be seen if he would be content not playing every week so soon after being Dundee United’s first choice goalkeeper.

That is always something to take into account when signing goalkeepers, there is a chance that you will be an important member of the squad but rarely play any first-team football.
