Opinion: Reported six-figure fee for Celtic target looks to be a bargain

There have been more developments in Celtic‘s pursuit of Bayern Munich youngster Christopher Scott.

The Daily Record reports that Bayern are set to activate an extra year on the player’s contract but will allow him to leave for a fee around ‘€300,000 to €400,000’ – which is around £254,000 to £338,000. The report also discloses that Brentford and some German clubs are keen on signing the player.

The reported six-figure price tag seems like a bargain fee for the 19-year-old, and it could be reminiscent of Celtic’s move for Moussa Dembele.

When the Hoops signed the French striker from Fulham in 2016, they managed to get him on a bargain fee, and he turned out to be a real steal at the reported price of around £500,000, as he helped the Bhoys win two trebles before leaving to join Lyon for a fee of £19.7m.

Perhaps that is what Celtic are planning to do with Scott, have the player establish himself in Glasgow before selling him on for a huge transfer fee after two or three seasons at Celtic Park.

The player has scored six goals in 13 games for Bayern Munich II this season, and that is a good record for an attacking midfielder, although it is hard to tell just how high the standard of football is in that particular league.

Interestingly, the player was in action last night for the German under-20 side as they took on England in an Elite League game. He completed the 90 minutes as Germany lost 3-1, and one wonders if Celtic had a scout at the game to watch the attacker in action.

That would make sense, but you have to think that Celtic’s interest in the player will not be determined by how he performed in one international game, and he will have been on the Hoops’ radar for a while.
