Opinion: QPR must not hesitate regarding key man’s future as summer window looms

Queens Park Rangers have recently hit a major stumbling block in their quest to secure a top-six finish in the Championship.

Since securing victories over West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City and Reading in January, the R’s have embarked on an incredibly concerning run of form.

In their last 10 league matches, QPR have only managed to accumulate eight points and are no longer in the play-off places.

The R’s now face an uphill task to extend their season past the 46 game mark as their talisman Chris Willock is set to watch on from the sidelines for the remainder of the term due to an issue with his hamstring.

As well as needing to improve in an attacking sense, QPR’s recent defensive performances have been below par.

Forced to watch on from the substitutes bench for his side’s defeats to Nottingham Forest and Peterborough United, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Yoann Barbet returns to the club’s starting eleven for this weekend’s clash with Fulham as the R’s conceded a combined total of six goals without him in these two games.

Since joining QPR in 2019, the defender has emerged as a key figure at QPR by producing a host of impressive performances in the Championship for the club.

Yet despite the fact that Barbet is currently averaging a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.92 at this level, the R’s have yet to make a decision regarding his long-term future at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Barbet’s current deal is set to expire in June and thus he will become a free-agent this summer if an agreement cannot be reached regarding a new contract.
