Opinion: Postecoglou shouldn't change policy despite impending Celtic exit

It seems that after a lot of speculation, Celtic youngster Ben Doak is finally set to complete his move to Liverpool, as the Scottish Sun reports that a deal is close to being done, and that Celtic will receive a six-figure fee for his exit.

That news is undeniably disappointing, as Doak seems to be a player with a big future – not many 16-year-olds break into the Celtic first-team like he did this season – but it seems that he will be a Liverpool player sooner than later.

Even though Doak is set to leave the Bhoys, his impending exit shouldn’t change what seems to be an Ange Postecoglou policy of giving young players a chance in the Hoops first-team.

So far this season, Postecoglou has given first-team appearances to Adam Montgomery, Owen Moffat, Dane Murray and Karamoko Dembele, as well as the aforementioned Doak.

There is always a concern that a club might see something in one of the players and attempt to sign them, like Liverpool have done with Doak, but that doesn’t mean the Hoops boss should stop giving young players a chance in the Celtic squad.

Being in the squad and training with the first-team players on a regular basis will likely give these starlets plenty of confidence. It shows that the manager trusts them to make an impact for the first-team at a young age, and that can only be a good thing for these Celtic players.

It will be interesting to see how the players that Postecoglou has given a chance to this season fare in the future for the Bhoys. If only one or two of them become Celtic regulars then that will show that his policy will have been a success.

Ideally all of them will become Hoops regulars, but that doesn’t seem realistic, due to the number of players that Celtic already have in the squad.
