Opinion: Middlesbrough must consider stepping up transfer pursuit of 24-year-old this summer

Having dusted themselves down following what was a disappointing end to the 2021/22 campaign, Middlesbrough will now be determined to move forward as a club under the guidance of manager Chris Wilder.

With the transfer window set to open later this week, it will be fascinating to see whether Boro are able to secure the services of some classy operators between now and the start of the upcoming season.

Wilder may need to bolster his attacking options in the coming months as Middlesbrough were relatively toothless in-front of goal during the closing stages of the previous term.

Boro only managed to score seven goals in their last eight league games as the likes of Folarin Balogun, Andraz Sporar and Aaron Connolly failed to step up to the mark.

This particular trio have now returned to their parent-clubs and thus Boro are relatively short of players in this particular area.

One of the individuals who has recently been linked with a move to the Riverside Stadium is Viktor Gyokeres.

According to The Sun, Middlesbrough are interested in signing the forward from Coventry City.

Boro could face competition for Gyokeres’ signature from Fulham who have also been touted as a potential suitor.

If Middlesbrough are indeed interested in the 24-year-old, they must step up their pursuit by submitting a reasonable bid in the not-too-distant future as he knows exactly what it takes to compete at this level.

In the previous term, Gyokeres set the Championship alight with his attacking displays as he managed to score 17 goals for the Sky Blues in this particular division whilst he also provided five assists for his team-mates.
