Opinion: Key area of Celtic squad is looking stronger by the game

Celtic have had big contributions from many areas of the squad this season. In goals, Joe Hart has been excellent. The centre-back duo of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt have helped the Hoops to the best defensive record in the Scottish top flight.

In attack, the likes of Kyogo and Liel Abada have been vital to the Hoops. But there is one area of the Celtic squad that has been key to how well the team have been performing in recent weeks – and that is the Hoops midfield.

The midfield has always been a strong part of the Celtic side, when you consider that it has the likes of captain Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and the mercurial Tom Rogic in its’ ranks.

But the moves that the Bhoys have made in the January transfer window have made the midfield the strongest it has looked in a long time, particularly the additions of Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley.

That duo in particular have been excellent for the Hoops, they have helped to take the team to a new level this season. Hatate has already scored three goals – including two against Rangers – whilst O’Riley looks like he has played for the team for years, so seamlessly has he settled into life at Celtic Park.

So strong is the midfield at the moment that there is no guarantee that David Turnbull, who was a Hoops mainstay this season until he suffered a hamstring injury, will get back into the Celtic starting line-up. He may have to wait a while.

Looking at the midfield overall, the Hoops have plenty of options to choose from. The midfield could change game by game, depending on the situation. For example, there are some games where it would make sense for Nir Bitton to get the nod to start the game, particularly in Europe.
