Opinion: Celtic star will keep feet on the ground as season reaches climax

Celtic captain Callum McGregor should be pleased with how he has handled his first season as Hoops skipper.

He has led the Hoops to the top of the Scottish Premiership, and the team looks set fare to win a domestic treble.

However, McGregor surely won’t let himself or his teammates get carried away with what has happened so far this season. There is still too much work to be done, to ensure that the Bhoys go on to win the league title.

Therefore, you would expect McGregor to keep his feet on the ground, and to encourage his teammates to do the same. Even though it has been an excellent season for the Hoops so far, the league has not been won, and there is still the Scottish Cup to win as well, and McGregor will be taking it one game at a time, beginning with the Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers on Sunday.

It is interesting to compare McGregor with his predecessor as Hoops captain, Scott Brown.

McGregor doesn’t seem to share some of the same characteristics as Brown, he seems less ‘gallus’ as the former Hoops skipper. But what both players do have in common is their will to win. McGregor would have learned that from his years playing in the same Celtic midfield as Brown.

McGregor had to deal with a lot at the start of the season as the Hoops lost a number of key players and had some poor results, but the team has united since then, and the current 33-game domestic unbeaten run that the Bhoys are on is testament to what can happen when a team comes together.

McGregor surely won’t be satisfied with that unbeaten run though. He will want the Hoops to achieve more. He will want to lift the Scottish Premiership trophy high above his head
