Opinion: Celtic star may not get chance to reach double figures this season

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull was one of the Hoops’ most important players this season until he suffered a hamstring injury in December, which kept him out of action until March.

The good news is that the player made his return for the Bhoys against Ross County last month, but after playing three games for the Hoops as a substitute he suffered another injury in the recent win over St Johnstone, he had to walk off the pitch before the end of the game as the Bhoys had use all the subs and he couldn’t continue.

At the time of writing there is no news on the severity of Turnbull’s injury, but he has to be a doubt for the upcoming Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers, you have to imagine.

Perhaps if the injury is a bad one, the best idea would be to shut down Turnbull for the rest of the season and have him return to action next season. That would be a blow for the midfielder, but it would perhaps be the best idea to allow the former Motherwell man to get back to full fitness next season.

The unfortunate thing for the 22-year-old is that if he was fit he would likely be in the Celtic starting line-up, as he has proven to be a favourite of Ange Postecoglou.

Before he suffered his hamstring injury, Turnbull had played 34 games for the Bhoys, starting in every game this season. With the January arrival of Reo Hatate, Turnbull might find it harder to hold down a first-team spot, even though he is likely still a big favourite of the Hoops boss.

Turnbull has scored nine goals this season, and it would be a pity for him if he can’t reach double figures before the end of the campaign. If it wasn’t for his injury, he would have been a certainty to score 10 goals and possibly a few more for the Hoops.
