Opinion: Celtic spending spree is a real statement of intent to rivals

Celtic don’t seem to be resting on their laurels as the team looks to defend the league title and compete in the Champions League next season, the Bhoys look to be willing to spend big in order to make the team even better than it was last season.

That was shown firstly in the permanent signing of Cameron Carter-Vickers, and has continued with the signing of Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus, with the left-back signing for the Bhoys for a reported fee of £3.75m.

With the Carter-Vickers fee reportedly around £6m plus add-ons, that is around £10m that the Hoops have spent so far, and if Jota signs on a permanent deal that will take the spending to around £16m.

The fact that Celtic are committed to spending so much money should please the Hoops support, as it shows that the club are willing to back Ange Postecoglou and get behind him, which is what he fully deserves after a very successful first season as Hoops manager.

It should also serve as a warning to Celtic’s domestic rivals that the Bhoys will be looking to improve on the team’s performances of last season, and perhaps be even more dominant in Scotland.

Celtic do have some issues in the squad that still need to be addressed, with Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton leaving a new midfielder will need to be brought in, and a centre-back will need to replace Christopher Jullien.

But you would back Ange Postecoglou to get the right players in, as his record of signing players has been excellent so far, and hopefully that will continue with the signing of Bernabei.

There is still around a month to go before the season starts, and two months until the transfer window closes, so you would expect the Hoops to make more signings before the first league game of the season against Aberdeen.
