Opinion: Cardiff City must step up their pursuit of 30-year-old this summer as window looms

Cardiff City will be determined to reach new heights in the Championship next season following what was an underwhelming 2021/22 campaign.

The Bluebirds meandered their way to an 18th place finish in the second-tier standings after opting to draft in Steve Morison as Mick McCarthy’s replacement.

Morison has already started to stamp his own authority on the club’s squad ahead of what is set to be his first full season in charge of Cardiff.

Ebou Adams, Jak Alnwick, Ollie Tanner and Jamilu Collins are all set to feature for the Bluebirds next season after recently sealing moves to the Cardiff City Stadium.

Given that the club will no longer be able to call upon the services of Uche Ikpeazu and Jordan Hugill in the upcoming campaign due to the fact that they have now returned their parent-clubs following their loan spells, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Cardiff are looking to sign a new striker this summer.

One of the individuals who has emerged as a potential target is Andre Gray.

According to Football Insider, the Bluebirds are reportedly interested in signing the forward who is set to be available on a free transfer this summer following Watford’s decision to release him.

Cardiff could face competition from Birmingham City and Reading for the forward’s signature as both of these sides have also been touted as potential suitors.

If this report turns out to be true, the Bluebirds must step up their pursuit of Gray as the 30-year-old has illustrated during his career that he is more than capable of delivering the goods in the Championship.

In his loan spell at Queens Park Rangers last season, the R’s ended the term as the club’s top-scorer as he managed to find the back of the net on 10 occasions.
