Opinion: Ange Postecoglou may have found the ideal role for Celtic talent

Before Celtic played Rangers at the weekend, Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou must have contemplated starting Nir Bitton in the game. The Celtic veteran has been in and out of the side for most of the season, but had started in the games at Hearts and Livingston.

However, the Hoops manager elected not to start the midfielder, but bring him on in the 61st minute to replace Reo Hatate, and the move worked a treat, as Bitton turned in an excellent display to help the Hoops win 2-1.

Bitton slotted into the midfield area and did exactly what needed to be done to ensure that Celtic won the game. He won the ball, retained possession and even picked up a smart booking.

WhoScored.Com shows just how well Bitton performed in his time on the pitch. Bitton had four interceptions, which is the most that any Celtic player managed in the game. He also contributed one blocked shot and two clearances.

That defensive display was key to making sure that the Hoops withstood the pressure that Rangers were putting the team under in the second-half. The four interceptions in particular were vital, as that allowed Celtic to get the ball and push further up the park.

The role that Bitton played for the Hoops against Rangers could be the role that the player now takes on for the Bhoys on a regular basis.

Most weeks Celtic will be attacking, and there will likely be no need to Bitton to start games when the Hoops will be on the front-foot.

For games when Celtic need to dig in though, and need to work hard for the win, then Bitton can be introduced to help the Hoops pick up the three points.

The game at Ibrox suited Bitton, as it was a backs to the wall battle, similar to how the games against Hearts and Livingston that Bitton started earlier this year.
