Opinion: 12 clearances - Celtic star stood up to be counted in huge win

There has rightfully been a lot of praise for Cameron Carter-Vickers in the aftermath of Celtic‘s 2-1 win over Rangers at the weekend.

That is completely understandable, as he scored the winning goal. But it is time that similar praise was given to his defensive partner Carl Starfelt. Starfelt managed to overcome an unconvincing start to the derby to help the Hoops achieve a huge victory.

He was a rock for Celtic at the back, as he and Carter-Vickers managed to stand firm and stop Rangers’ attacks in the second-half. Both players were particularly good in the air, as they headed away cross after cross.

WhoScored.Com shows just how well Starfelt did at getting the basics of defending right. He had an incredible 12 clearances in the game, which is four more than any other Celtic player had. Cameron Carter-Vickers had eight.

It is testament to the mental strength that the 26-year-old has that he managed to overcome what was a poor start to the game. When he was forced into defending in the second-half as Rangers put the Hoops under pressure, he was imperious.

Starfelt’s reported £4m transfer fee is starting to look like a bargain when you consider just how well he has performed for the Hoops this season. Celtic have conceded the least number of goals in the Premiership this season, and Starfelt is a big reason for that.

Even though Starfelt has been excellent this season, he will want to improve his performances for the Hoops in Europe next season, especially if he ends up playing in the Champions League group stages.

Celtic will need to up their game overall when it comes to Europe next season, and Ange Postecoglou and his players will be aware of that, and they will want to improve on how they play in Europe, and Starfelt
