One FM commentary team axed as Goulburn Valley League turns to streaming

Community radio station One FM has been told its commentary of the Goulburn Valley League [GVL] will not be required this season despite having broadcast its matches for three decades.

The football and netball league is instead expected to utilise live streaming options in a move One FM commentator Kyle Power described as a «shock».

«No doubt it's quite a shock to our followers as well,» he said.

«As a community radio station we have got volunteers that have put a lot of time and effort into running a product for the Goulburn Valley League, which we thought was pretty good.»

Mr Power was worried the move would alienate some fans.

«I understand what the league is trying to do in terms of expanding and getting it all online, but the generational gap between the online people and the ones that can't get [online], it's going to be disappointing,» he said.

The league admitted the decision to cut ties with One FM was not easy but was made with the best interest of the club and fans at heart.

«We have a limited budget and wanted to see where we can get best value,» GVL chairman David Roff said.

«Live streaming is becoming more popular and people really warm to it, and we're thinking that could be really good for our supporters and clubs.»

Mr Roff said an announcement about the options provided for fans to access the game would be made soon.

«When people see what we have got to offer they will jump on board,» he said.

In a statement, One FM said the league's decision to cease radio broadcasts had left them «confused and heartbroken».

Mr Power said the broadcast had been a joy for volunteers to deliver and his colleagues had been left «shattered» by the announcement.
